11th Grade Omnibus: Foundations of America
Magdalen Classical Academy’s “11th Grade Omnibus: Foundations of America” course invites students into a wide-ranging survey of the history, politics, and culture of the United States of America. Students will trace the history of America from its settlement to the civil rights era, follow American political thought from its roots in English political philosophy through the founding documents and major debates that shaped American government, consider how Americans have related to religion and spirituality, and develop an appreciation of American literature and poetry –– all by reading great texts under the guidance of a mentor well-versed in American history and thought. Authors include John Locke, Benjamin Franklin, Jonathan Edwards, Henry David Thoreau, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., and more.
The ultimate goal of the course is for students to grow into virtuous citizens with a mature and abiding love for the country they call home. They will be invited to develop a robustly Biblical and Christian perspective on the philosophical, political, historical, and cultural factors that have shaped American society over the centuries.
It is our hope that, by reading and discussing the brilliant and influential thinkers who have shaped our nation, “11th Grade Omnibus: Foundations of America” students will gain unique insight into the roots of the political conflicts playing out in our world today and develop a nuanced understanding of how Christians’ allegiance to their earthly home exists in both harmony and tension with their devotion to the kingdom of heaven.
We recommend that parents and independent study programs count this class as meeting the requirements for 35 high school credits of American Literature and Composition (10), American History (10), Bible/Theology (10), and Government (5).
This class meets twice per week according to the campus schedule.
Note: If your student is taking an Omnibus class for the first time, they must also enroll in the online Writing Lab class.
Note: If you wish to enroll your student at our Fullerton campus, you will need to enroll through Peace Hill.
